5 Ways A Week
by Ed (Community Physical Activity Organiser)

It has been one of those weeks that reminds you just how much happens in our local communities, and how the Five Ways to Wellbeing can be found in everyday activities.
The week began with a fascinating Nature ID Walk in Countess Wear, where local residents joined Community Builder Sam and I to explore the wildlife on our doorstep. Using the Seek and Merlin apps, we spent time identifying plants, insects and birds that many of us would otherwise have walked straight past. It was a great opportunity to slow down, take notice of the natural world around us and learn something new together.

Later in the week, Community Builder Bernice and I attended the Pollinators Family Picnic in Northbrook Park, organised by Devon Wildlife Trust. The event was packed with activities for all ages, including seed bomb making, a nature quiz trail and bug hunting. We also learned about the native black bee reintroduction project and the important role pollinators play in supporting biodiversity. It was wonderful to see so many families enjoying the park, connecting with nature and each other in such a relaxed and welcoming setting.
The week finished with a community litter pick on the playing fields in Wonford. Joining Bernice again and members of Wonford Planters, staff from Wonford Community Centre, local councillors and residents, we spent time helping to care for one of our valued local green spaces. It was a fantastic example of people coming together to make a positive difference in their neighbourhood.

Reflecting on these activities, it struck me that we managed to cover all Five Ways to Wellbeing. We connected with residents and community groups over walks, picnics, tea and coffee; we learned about local wildlife, pollinators and conservation projects; we took notice of the green spaces and nature that surround us; we were certainly active, spending time outdoors walking, exploring and litter picking; and we gave our time to help look after our community spaces and support local events.
Sometimes improving our wellbeing isn't about grand gestures or major life changes. Often it can be found in simple moments: spotting a bird you've never noticed before, sharing a picnic in the park, or spending an hour helping to keep your local green space looking its best. This week was a perfect reminder of that.
