Beacon Heath Community Meal: A Community-Led Response to Isolation and Food Insecurity

A Meal That Means More

The closure of the local Food Cycle meal left a significant gap within the Beacon Heath community. For more than 40 residents who attended regularly, the weekly meal provided much more than access to food. It created opportunities for people to connect, build friendships, reduce isolation, and develop a sense of belonging.

Recognising the importance of this provision, the Community Builder worked with local residents and volunteers to explore how the project could continue. Early conversations quickly revealed a strong commitment within the community to sustain the initiative. Residents began identifying practical ways they could contribute. One volunteer simply stated, "I can cook." Others offered administrative support, fundraising assistance, and connections to local businesses and employers.

These conversations highlighted significant community assets already in place: a dedicated group of volunteers, strong demand from residents, and Beacon Heath Church's willingness to provide its facilities free of charge. With support and encouragement, volunteers began meeting regularly to develop a sustainable, community-led model.

The group's first objective was to organise a Christmas community meal, bringing residents back together while creating opportunities to engage people in shaping the future of the project. Alongside providing a welcoming meal, volunteers gathered feedback from attendees about local priorities and explored ways residents could become more actively involved.

Many participants expressed an interest in contributing through cooking, setting up venues, welcoming guests, organising activities, and supporting future events. This marked the beginning of a transition from a service delivered for the community to one increasingly delivered by the community.

As one volunteer reflected, "Sometimes all it takes is someone sitting alongside you, helping clear obstacles and gently saying, 'You can do this.'" The support provided through community development helped residents build confidence, develop leadership skills, and take ownership of the initiative.

Alongside preparations for the Christmas event, volunteers began planning a programme of regular community meals for the New Year. Conversations with residents and partner organisations focused on developing a sustainable approach that would remain responsive to local needs while strengthening community capacity.

The project has attracted support from a range of local partners. You Grow has continued to work alongside the volunteer team acting as a host organisation  and also intergrating the Beacon Heath Kitchen Garden project into it , while local councillors have provided support through a ward grant. Additional contributions have been received from Morrison's, Food Action Waste, Tesco, and Bouygues, demonstrating broad community and organisational backing for the initiative.

Together, these contributions have helped establish the foundations for a sustainable community meal programme that strengthens social connections, promotes wellbeing, and builds resilience across Beacon Heath.

Growing Community Ownership

The impact of the project became evident from the earliest community-led meals.

At the second community meal, residents arrived before the advertised start time to help prepare the venue. Neighbours set up tables and chairs, welcomed guests, served food, and helped clear away afterwards. The event demonstrated a growing sense of ownership and pride among participants.

Rather than relying solely on a small group of organisers, residents increasingly took responsibility for delivering the project themselves. As volunteers observed, "It wasn't just volunteers supporting the community – it was the community supporting itself."

This growing participation reflects one of the project's most significant achievements: creating opportunities for residents to move from being recipients of support to active contributors within their community.

Six Months Later: Lasting Community Impact

Six months on, the Beacon Heath Community Meal is thriving.

Supported by the Community Builder, a dedicated team of local volunteers now delivers a regular monthly meal that has become an established and valued part of community life. Volunteers contribute across every aspect of delivery, from meal preparation and serving to event organisation, welcoming guests, and clearing up.

What began as a small group determined to preserve a valued local service has evolved into a wider community movement. The most significant outcome has been the growth in resident participation and ownership. People who initially attended as guests are now actively involved in organising and delivering the meals, helping with preparations, welcoming newcomers, sharing ideas, and supporting the smooth running of events.

The project has also fostered creativity and community pride. The community meal logo itself was developed collaboratively by volunteers and attendees during a shared meal, reflecting the sense of ownership that has become central to the initiative.

The impact of the project is best illustrated through the experiences of those involved. One volunteer explained: "I love that ancient, human feeling of sharing a meal. It's more than calories; it's that connection with other people, helping combat isolation and anxiety for me and the community."

Another volunteer shared: "Really enjoyed working with you all this evening. Thank you for a delicious meal and see you at the next one – can't wait!"

These reflections highlight the project's contribution to reducing isolation, strengthening relationships, improving wellbeing, and creating meaningful opportunities for participation.

What began as a response to the loss of a much-loved community meal has become a sustainable, community-led initiative that continues to bring neighbours together, strengthen local connections, and create a welcoming space where everyone feels they belong.

The Beacon Heath Community Meal is delivered through partnership working and community collaboration, with support from Exeter Food Action, You Grow, Beacon Heath Church, Beacon Kitchen Garden, Willowbrook School, St James School and the Beacon Centre.
