As part of ongoing Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) efforts in the area, a community walkabout with a local resident—organised to celebrate the launch of a Little Free Library—sparked an unexpected opportunity for positive transformation.
During the walk, the resident pointed out a nearby public bench in poor condition, defaced with a racist slur. Instead of dismissing it as someone else’s responsibility, the resident saw potential. They shared an idea: to reclaim and repurpose the bench as a vibrant, inclusive space for the whole community.

What followed was a powerful, grassroots response:
Local residents volunteered their time and skills to support the project.
Nearby businesses stepped up, donating paint, brushes, and other materials.
Young people helped shape the design, focusing on themes of inclusion, kindness, and pride.
The necessary permissions were secured from the local council to restore and repaint the bench.

This initiative has since become a symbol of local connection, creativity, and resilience. It’s a clear demonstration of the ABCD principle: starting with what’s strong—not what’s wrong—and empowering residents to lead the change they want to see.
A small celebration was then planned to mark the bench’s transformation, which stands as a lasting reminder of what’s possible when community members come together to make a difference.
