I had such a wonderful discovery this month visiting the Whipton Social Club. From the outside, it’s easy to walk past without noticing and looks like a closed down building. There’s nothing on the club's noticeboards, it's very quiet in the day time and it didn’t feature in my handover.
Once inside, it revealed itself as a brilliant community hub with huge potential. Nicole, one of the members who leads the club, kindly showed me around and told me about the wide range of activities: War Gamers, Euchre, karate, skittles, darts, pool, and plans for upcoming Halloween and Christmas events. Membership is just £12 per year, and visitors can come along up to three times before joining.

What really stood out was the potential of the space itself - it includes a large indoor hall available for just £10 per hour during weekdays, and Nicole is open to supporting non-profit groups with potentially free or reduced rate access. I didn’t previously know of any affordable indoor space in Whipton so this feels like a real asset for the community especially in the winter months. I’m meeting with Nicole again to explore ways we can work together, particularly around holiday events and sports activities.
Sharing this discovery on Facebook was hugely popular - the post has had over 5,250 views already, with lots of comments from people keen to know more about parking, if dogs are allowed, Sky Sports, and the cost of drinks. It seems that I wasn’t the only one to have overlooked the club. I’ve also shared details of the club with a number of groups who are struggling with hire costs or looking for a venue.
The Whipton Social Club feels like a hidden treasure found at just the right time as the winter months begin. It’s full of potential for community collaboration, and I’m excited about the possibilities ahead, including introducing the club to Georgie (Community Physical Activity Organiser), who is equally enthusiastic about the venue for local sports and events.
