From a Neglected Green Space to a Resident-Led Community

What started as a neglected green space has gradually become something much more meaningful. Working alongside local residents, we began looking after the space together and introduced a monthly Social Café on the first Saturday of each month. I supported the sessions as the Community Builder, bringing refreshments and creating opportunities for residents to meet, chat, share ideas and get to know their neighbours.

Community building takes time, and sometimes its impact becomes most visible when the Community Builder is no longer in the room.

While I was away on holiday, I was really pleased to see residents take the initiative themselves.

Using the WhatsApp group we had developed to stay connected, they organised and ran the Social Café without me. From there, they went a step further and arranged a picnic together in another local green space that residents have been helping to look after.

Seeing photographs of neighbours sitting together, chatting, welcoming new faces and talking about what matters in their community was a lovely example of the sustainability we hope to create through community building.

The WhatsApp group has played an important role in this. What began as a practical way of communicating has developed into a space where residents can connect directly with one another, make plans and take action without relying on the Community Builder to organise everything.

This has been a reminder that sustainable community building does not happen quickly. It grows slowly through trust, relationships and repeated opportunities for people to connect. But when residents begin to take ownership, create their own activities and strengthen relationships independently, the impact can continue far beyond our direct involvement.
