As the evenings draw in and the daylight fades, feeling safe on two wheels becomes more important than ever. That’s why Paul and Ed joined forces with Cycling UK to host Wellbeing Exeter's very first Glow Ride – an event designed to brighten up the streets and raise awareness of safer cycling during the winter months.
This year Cycling UK's theme focused on women’s right to move around our streets with freedom, encouraging confidence in using active travel throughout the colder, darker months. But the Glow Ride was about more than just lights – it was about community, solidarity, and making cycling feel safer and more welcoming for everyone.
And what a turnout! 25 riders of all abilities came along, decorating their bikes with our glowing stickers and fairy lights before setting off on a gentle group ride along dedicated cycle routes and quiet back roads. The atmosphere was fantastic, and the feedback even better – many asked when the next one would be, proving just how much fun active travel can be.
We were thrilled to see support from local organisations including Ride On, Exeter Cycling Campaign, and local cycling instructors. Their help with promotion and stewarding made the event possible and ensured everyone stayed safe along the route. This collaboration strengthens our shared voice in calling for better cycling routes and stronger community connections.
This was the first event we’ve run in partnership with Cycling UK, and the response exceeded expectations. It’s clear there’s a real appetite for more activities like this, and we’re excited to keep the momentum going.
So, watch this space! Paul's already planning more rides and initiatives to support, educate, and empower people to travel actively. Together, we can make Exeter a brighter, safer place to cycle.
