The Community Physical Activity Organiser Role

By Charlotte (Community Physical Activity Organiser)

Starting a new role often brings a mix of excitement and uncertainty. Stepping into my position as a Community Physical Activity Organiser (CPAO) in North Exeter has been no different. As I’ve been finding my feet, I’ve been similarly reminded that starting or returning to exercise, clubs or sports can feel daunting. And while the link between physical activity and wellbeing is well known, taking that first step isn’t always easy. Especially when it feels like you’re doing it alone.

It’s easy to worry about not fitting in or not feeling “fit enough.” I’ve heard that echoed by many and what I’m coming to understand is that it’s rarely about ability, but instead knowing where to begin and finding an environment that enables you to feel confident.

Across North Exeter, there are various free and low-cost ways to get moving. One of my first priorities was to experience some sessions first-hand.

Despite never really kicking a ball before, I was welcomed into Beacon Wanderers, a walking football group based at St James astro on Fridays, 8pm to 9pm. Greg created the group after going through his own health journey and describes now being “really passionate about helping others in the community do the same”. After his return to football, he shares the lesson he’s learnt from this process has been “find the right environment for you”—something that has stayed with me.

I also attended a free women’s yoga class ran by Inclusive Exeter at Southernhay URC. Walking in, I felt that familiar uncertainty, but this didn’t last long. Sonia, who leads the sessions, brings warmth and energy that gently builds confidence. She has a following of supportive regulars who help create a welcoming space where everyone can take part.

What stood out from these sessions was that it was not just about trying touch your toes or improving flexibility. They’re about connection, encouragement and belonging, whether you are new or trying something different for yourself.

My role is to help connect people with movement that suit them and share what activity is on offer locally. Working alongside our Community Builders allows me to hear directly from locals ways we can keep Exeter proudly as the UK’s most active city. I’m excited to keep discovering what North Exeter has to offer. If you’re thinking about moving more or building connections, you can get in touch through the Wellbeing Exeter website.
