The Story of the Betty's Mead Little Free Library

The new Betty's Mead Little Free Library is a wonderful example of what can happen when a community comes together around a shared idea.

From the very beginning, my role as a community builder was to help turn a local idea into reality. This included supporting residents to secure a ward grant, source funding, find the right location, navigate permissions, and connect with an artist to bring the library box to life.

What makes projects like this so special is the collaboration behind them. Neighbours helped varnish the box, a local artist transformed it with beautiful artwork, a community group agreed to host it, and local councillors supported the project through ward grant funding. It was a delight to help weave all these different contributions together through existing relationships and connections. This is now the sixth Little Free Library the Builder has helped create.

It was a pleasure to join Betty's Mead neighbours last week for the launch celebration. Families brought tables, crafts, cakes and, most importantly, plenty of books to share and exchange. The afternoon was filled with stories—not just from the books, but from residents themselves. We heard about long-standing street traditions including parties, barbecues, shared tools and clothing swaps, all highlighting the strong community spirit that already exists in the neighbourhood.

The launch also sparked new ideas for the future, including a community noticeboard and local litter-picking events. Residents had the opportunity to meet their local councillors, who dropped by to celebrate and whose ward grant support helped make the project possible.

The Little Free Library is much more than a place to swap books; it's a symbol of connection, generosity and neighbourliness.

If you have an idea that could help bring your street or neighbourhood together, we'd love to hear from you. Do get in touch for a chat.
